FAUSTO PODAVINI – In the Middle of Black Christianity”

FAUSTO PODAVINI – In the Middle of Black Christianity”

“In the Middle of Black Christianity” is a photographic project developed over several years in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. An anthropological work, it aims to restore the identity of a country that has undergone profound changes in recent years due to European and Chinese investment, through an investigation of the only indigenous religion in Central Africa, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Despite a history of invasions during the colonial era and conflicts with neighbouring countries, Somalia and Eritrea, Ethiopia has managed to preserve its religious institutions, with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church becoming the spiritual guide of the people. An original synthesis of the ancient Christian tradition of the East and the African reality, it is centred on ancient traditions of direct apostolic derivation; it is based on the Old Testament and the tablets of Moses contained in the Ark of the Covenant, which Ethiopian tradition sees as preserved in the Church of Our Lady of Zion in Axum, the true religious centre. The daily life of the faithful is marked by liturgical times, and the rituals of religious festivals blend with everyday activities. Young and old, men and women all express their beliefs, preserving generation after generation an identity that seems truly resistant and unshakeable by anything or anyone.
