ALAIN SCHROEDER Living for Death

Although it remains a sad moment, the transition from life to death is a slow and peaceful process, which in Toraja, Indonesia, can take a long time, even years. Rituals for caring for deceased loved ones serve to strengthen family ties. In August, after the rice harvest, in the Ma’ Nene ceremony, the mummies are exhumed and cleaned, a loving way to accompany the ancestors to the spirit world.
