“No men are born on Mount Athos. They arrive there out of faith, need, curiosity, attraction or desperation. They are initiated into asceticism and embark on a march towards death, the goal of which is a place in the monastery’s ossuary.”
Mount Athos, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is forbidden to women. Kalafatis has been fascinated by it since he was a boy; he began the project in 2008, returning to the Holy Mountain many times over the course of five years, because time works differently there, becoming one with the centuries. He travelled by mule and on foot along the paths that lead to the unpredictable, to the monasteries, caves and cells of the hermits. He ate, prayed with them, listened to their thoughts and tried to reach their hearts. Kalafatis’ images pierce through the black of the monks’ robes to show us the light and colours of this mysterious place; they reveal its spiritual soul made up of gestures, details, crosses painted red and yellow, and others formed by the play of light on the floor of a cell. He is enchanted by her wild beauty.. At nightfall, the darkness is illuminated by the faint lights of the hilltop monasteries, reminding us once again of the power of faith.
