THE TOURISM IN THE CLIMATE CHANGE ERA

In his long-term project Tourism in the Era of Climate Change (2015–2021), Marco Zorzanello investigates – by selecting four of the geographical areas most affected by the effects of climate change – the tourism industry’s capacity to reinvent itself in the age of climate change. Three of the four chapters are on display: Iceberg Souvenir (Canada, Greenland and Iceland), Snow Land (the Italian Dolomites), Water Tour (Palestine, Jordan and Israel) and Lost Paradise (the Republic of the Maldives).
The photographer captures the contradictions of tourists, who, in order not to miss out on their holidays, adapt to grotesque situations. He strips tourist destinations of their picture-postcard glamour and uses irony to reveal the paradoxes: apocalyptic selfies amidst snowless mountains, the commodification of disaster and the normalisation of the absurd. Tourists are so accustomed to a “new normal” that they fail to notice the climate catastrophe unfolding before them.
