PRETEND THERE IS WATER

How will the Dutch be able to live without the element that has shaped them? In Pretend There Is Water, Agterberg evokes a sense of fear and anticipation, highlights signs of national pride and, at the same time, embraces the nation’s amphibious nature as it moves towards a future of necessary adaptation, tracing the places where water has already been welcomed.
By combining black and white with colour, archive material, documentary photography and performances by young actors, she fosters a collective awareness. In this interweaving of memory, myths and legends, the identity emerges of a people who have always fought against and contained water – through engineering and land reclamation projects – and who are now faced with a radical choice.
